This year saw California's The Growlers release their fifth full length album Chinese Fountain (Out in Australia via Smack Face Records) and now they are bringing their internationally-celebrated live show back to Australian shores throughout January 2015.
After showcasing their “Beach Goth” intensity to sold-out shows throughout Australia already earlier this year, The Growlers returned to their home of California to bring you a new full-length album of reverb-heavy surf-guitar, Bakersfield-style honky-tonk, and ‘80s post-punk that fans have come to expect, but this time with a whole mix of new sounds. The 11 songs found on Chinese Fountain are some of the strongest and most diverse that they’ve committed to tape yet; a by-product not only of eight years in the trenches together, but finely honing their gypsy folk dirges and psychedelic sea shanties to fans at close to 150 shows each year.
For The Growlers maiden [Australian] voyage the crowd was rabid. There was a fair amount of moshing, crowdsurfing, dancing girls, shirtless young men, and lots of stage dives – but The Growlers played on unfazed.
- The Music
Last time they were here, fans were given a sold out tour filled with intimate shows, sweaty rooms, and endless dancing as The Growlers played and surfed their way across the country. Lead singer Brooks Neilsen is the ideal front man; a mixture of swagger, performance, and dancing on stage, with each member providing a perfect sunburned and salty backdrop for Brooks to do his thing as they play hit after sweaty hit. Expect just as much sweat, dancing, psychedelia and stage dives this time around.
The Growlers have become an almost entirely different beast from their lo-fi recordings of years gone and for long time listeners it’s up to you whether to stick with them or not. Their band wagon is on a war path, with or without you.
- BEAT MAGAZINE (Album Of The Week)
Touring the US, UK and Europe for the the last few months (including their own curated third-annual “Beach Goth Festival” with the likes of DIIV, The Drums, Cherry Glazerr, Joyce Manor, Mariachi El Bronx, Bleached + Many More), The Growlers finally bring the Chinese Fountain tour to Australia with an extensive 12-dates throughout January, with more shows to be announced.
